Tonka Bean Bakery
Ever since I moved to Joburg, I have been in search of the perfect donuts and well I found em! If you are thinking about Krispy Kreme, then leave now, I am strictly for supporting local talent! Today's local talent is Shakil, the founder of Tonka Bean Bakery and home of Joburg's best donuts. Oh you think I'm wrong? Maybe you should go try them first ...
Shakil started us off with these sugar glazed pastries known as a kouign amann (think kween - amaan), made with 84% imported french butter, these have a croissant like texture. Very airy and light but with a sweeter finish!
Drum roll please! Introducing Joburg's finest donuts - each donut is filled with vanilla or Nutella custard and coated in sugar, The soft fluffiness of the donuts is contrasted with the crunch of the sugar and as you bite into the filling oozes out. I first tried the vanilla and was convinced that nothing could top it but woah was I wrong, the Nutella ones are in a league of their own. Um yes, I think I will have 12 please!
Ps. The bakery works on an order and collect basis. Visit the website for upcoming treats as wells as order contact details.

The Bakery is named after this little Tonka bean, which orginated in South America, and is known for its vanilla and wood scent. It is used in perfumes as well as dessert due to it high fragrant quality. Hey hey you learn something new every day!
Next up was a peanut butter and chocolate tart topped with a sprinkling of sesame seeds or a salted caramel chocolate tart. These tarts had a buttery outer crust and an almost stiff chocolate mousse type filling. In other words, these make for the perfect tea time treat!
