Hartenberg Wine Estate
Cape Town is the home of wine, and what better place to go wine tasting than in Stellenbosch. Now typically I would ride into the heart of Stellenbosch and choose one of the more familiar wine farms, however, my friends over at Zomato have a different idea. We took the road less travelled, and if aren't looking for it you will drive straight past Hartenberg's entrance. Tucked away, you have to drive up a winding driveway past the grapevines with spectacular views of the Stellenbosch mountain range till you arrive at the tasting venue.
For the main course we were served a burger, that was created for a competition that Hartenberg hosted. The contestants had to create a burger that would pair with a wine. The winning burger, the 'Braam' burger as it is know, is made with Wagyu beef mince and chorizo patty and was topped with melted mozzarella, honey glazed bacon, onion dust, guacamole, tomatoes and lettuce all served on a freshly baked brioche bun. The prize was that the burger would be on the menu for a year, I definitely think it deserves a lot longer than that!
Now I must admit, the burger was beautiful, but it was served with a bulgar wheat salad which is equally beautiful but when it's on its own. Both dishes are heavy so I wouldn't recommend ordering them together. That being said, it makes a great summer salad that can be a meal on its own. A mix of fresh rocket, broccoli stems and bulgar wheat is held together by a creamy and tangy dressing.
Summer desserts need to light, fresh and fruity. The honey semifreddo was just that and more. A semifreddo for me is somewhere between and ice-cream and a mousse. Ours was served with balsamic marinated berries - the tartness of the berries complimented the creaminess of the semifreddo.
We went on a mini tour of the farm learning about the wines that had been made that year, we crept into the cold cellar to take a sneak peak at the wines in their oak barrels. We then made our way to the outside section of the restaurant for lunch - now wine I'm still learning about, but food is really my expertise.
For starters there was a board of fresh bread, that was served with creamy snoek pate, smoked salmon and capers, pickled onions, cream cheese and peppered Mackerel.
The grounds at Hartenberg are beautiful for a picnic with the family or a group of friends. You can preorder a picnic basket filled with delicious goodies!
